Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are highly efficient and reliable capacitors, utilizing Ta-sintered anodes and liquid or solid electrolytes as part of their construction. These capacitors have high capacitance values and low equivalent series resistance (ESR). Due to their low ESR and high capacitance values, these capacitors are very popular in high frequency applications. M39003/01-2414/HSD is one of Holco’s most popular tantalum capacitors. This device is designed for use in high frequency switching applications, and has a capacitance value of 24microfarads, a working voltage rating of 25vdc, and an ESR of 0.015Ω. It features an axial lead with dual tubes of glass epoxy casing.

Application Field

Working Principle

The principle of operation for tantalum capacitors is the same as any other capacitor - it stores electrical charge in two conducting plates separated by an insulating material called the dielectric. In the case of tantalum capacitors, the dielectric is formed by an oxide layer on the surface of the tantalum anode. This oxide layer increases the capacitance of the device. With an applied voltage, an electric current will flow through the dielectric, creating an electric dipole in the oxide layer and allowing for the storage of a charge.
