Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are polarized capacitors which use tantalum as an anode material and are available with either a manganese dioxide or polymer electrolyte. They are available in a variety of formats and are capable of handling high capacitance with a very small physical size. M39003/01-2591H Application Field and Working Principle

The M39003/01-2591H is a type of axial-leaded, miniature surface-mount tantalum capacitor. It is rated at 25V, 1.5µF valve and is designed for use in automated high-speed and high-density surface mount applications. The device uses high-purity tantalum metal as the anode material and is encapsulated with a hermetic seal. The device has a built-in protection circuit which prevents overload current through the capacitance from destroying it. When current begins to flow through the capacitor, due to the applied voltage, the anode begins to oxidize and a small amount of current is drawn from the capacitor. This process is known as “ionization”. As the current continues to flow, the capacitance of the device increases, and so does its internal resistance. This prevents any more current from flowing, thus protecting the device against an overload.
