Tantalum capacitors are one of the most widely used electronic components, presenting in almost all types of electronic circuits. M39003/01-2600H is a type of tantalum capacitors produced by Vishay, designed as a hermetically sealed quasi-miniature version, combining size and excellent performance in one package. This article will focus on its application field and working principle.

Application Field

M39003/01-2600H utilizes a proprietary ceramic-to-metal sealing technology which provides the highest level of hermetic sealing. A silicon gasket (axial) in the corresponding position ensures electrical isolation. The capacitors are designed for high-temperature environments, and able to function under extreme climate condition, such as high temperature, high humidity and high pressure. Therefore, the M39003 series is suitable for a broad range of applications, especially for those related to high temperature and harsh environment, such as airborne military electronics, outdoor telecommunications, aerospace and defense systems and high-temperature programmable logic circuits.

In addition, the robust and reliable construction makes it well-suited for automotive electronics, high temperature power supplies, high voltage applications and radiation-hardened circuits.

Working Principle

M39003/01-2600H is a tantalum capacitor, which functions like a normal capacitor but with much lower leakage current. Inside a tantalum capacitor, one of the electrodes is made from a sintered tantalum which is compounded with oxide dielectric as an interlayer. There is an electrically-conductive-solid which helps the electrolytic solution to reach the surface of the dielectric layer, and provide a conductive path.

The working principle of a tantalum capacitor is quite simple. When the power leads connected to a capacitor, the capacitance is charged up with a positive and negative polarity, which results in the formation of a net electric field across the dielectric layer. The electric field penetrates into the dielectric layer and stores energy, which explains why a capacitor is capable of storing energy and releasing it when necessary.

M39003/01-2600H provides higher capacitance compared to other types of capacitors, produces less ESR, and minimizes self-heating due to its low leakage current. Furthermore, the capacitors feature excellent ACS performance, which ensures their reliability during powered and turn-on/turn-off application.
