Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are a type of capacitor that combines capacitance with high stability and relatively low dissipation. Working Principle

The M39003/01-2753 capacitor has three parts – a tantalum anode, a non-aqueous electrolyte, and a cathode. The anode is generally a sintered pellet of tantalum powder, while the electrolyte is usually potassium hydroxide. The cathode is usually a manganese dioxide mixture.

The capacitor works by having one of its plates being charged with an electrical current in a reverse of its polarity. As electrons flow into the anode, they build up a charge that is equal and opposite to the one on the cathode. This allows two charged plates, with opposite charges, to be held close together, enabling them to exchange energy upon the reversal of their polarity. When the external voltage is applied, the charge stored in the capacitor discharges, and the capacitor starts to discharge.

The capacitor also has a very low ESR (equivalent series resistance) when compared to other capacitors, which is another key advantage. Low ESR improves the capacitor\'s energy storage and performance, and allows it to last for a longer period of time.
