Working Principle of the M39003/01-2783/TR Tantalum Capacitor

The M39003/01-2783/TR tantalum capacitor is an electrolytic capacitor that works on the principle of dielectric absorption. This is when ions in the electrolyte, which acts as a conductor, are attracted to the oxide film on the anode, which is also an electric conductor. This creates a positive charge on the anode side, resulting in a voltage developed across the oxide film that is equal to the applied voltage. This voltage is proportional to the capacitance of the capacitor, which in turn is equal to the total area of the copper plates on the anode and cathode combined. When an electrical field is applied to the capacitor, electrons travel through the dielectric material and build up an electric charge on the anode. When the voltage is removed, the dielectric material discharges, releasing the stored energy back into the circuit.

Advantages of Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are widely used in power supplies, radio receivers, antennas, and other high-end signal amplification and low noise amplifier applications. The advantages of tantalum capacitors over other capacitor types include smaller size, high capacitance to volume ratio, high rated voltage, low dissipation factor, long service life, storage reliability, and excellent temperature characteristics. Disadvantages

Tantalum capacitors are not suitable for applications involving large ripple currents, as they can be prone to failure in such applications due to an excessive build up of heat caused by the ripple current. The dielectric oxide layer can also be damaged by soldering temperatures, meaning tantalum capacitors are not widely used in applications involving high temperatures.
