Tantalum Capacitors
Tantalum capacitors (or tantalum electrolytic capacitors, short for TC) are one kind of electrolytic capacitors. They are widely used as components in electronic circuits for their distinct properties and superior efficiency at low frequencies, over those of other commonly-used electrolytic capacitors. Tantalum capacitors are easier to design into a circuit as they come in various shapes that are actually designed for mounting within the circuit board. Also, they are smaller in size and usually depend less on the type of dielectric material used, allowing for further electronic circuit board miniaturization.
M39003/01-2896H Application Field and Working Principle
M39003/01-2896H is one of many types of tantalum capacitors. They are mainly used in circuits that require frequent charging and discharging, especially in audio and video applications such as high-frequency amplifiers and amplifier stages, audio output stages, and EQ boards. These capacitors have a low leakage current, good long-term stability, good equivalent series resistance (ESR) and reasonable capacitance retention.
The working principle of M39003/01-2896H capacitors is based on the electrolytic behavior of the electrolyte material. This particular type of capacitor consists of two metal electrodes immersed in an electrolyte solution, such as an organic solvent or an electrolyte salt dissolved in water or some other liquid. An electrical field is created between the two electrodes, and electrons can move through this field. This movement of electrons creates an electrical current. This electrical current is the basis behind the capacitor’s operation.
The electrodes used in M39003/01-2896H capacitors are typically made from tantalum, hence their name. When voltage is applied to the two electrodes, a very thin film of tantalum oxide is formed on the surface facing the anode (positive) electrode. This layer of oxide is an insulator (i.e. it prevents electrical current from passing through it) so the capacitor effectively acts like two insulators (or two capacitors) in series, and the current is stored between the two capacitors. As the device is charged, the voltage increases until it reaches its maximum rated voltage.
Another feature of M39003/01-2896H capacitors is the low ESR and good capacitance retention. This low ESR helps reduce the amount of heat generated by the capacitor, prolonging its lifespan. They can be used in a range of applications, from conventional switching to high-frequency, high-power switching devices, and are generally better suited for high-frequency applications where a low equivalent series resistance (ESR) is needed.
