Tantalum capacitors are a type of electrolytic capacitor, and use an electrolytic called tantalum pentoxide as one of their components. They are physically small, but have vastly greater energy densities than other capacitors. Alongside ceramic capacitors, this makes them suitable for use in high frequency switching supplies as well as portable electronic devices.M39003/01-2940 are tantalum capacitors. They have their application area in military& aerospace, medical, and general purpose high reliability/high temperature soldering processes. This type of tantalum capacitors is also well-suited for automotive applications due to their reliability under higher temperatures.M39003/01-2940 has a cylindrical shape with a metallic inner case and an anodized aluminum outer shell. This provides the structure strength, as well as keeping the sensitive elements inside from physical damages.The working principle of M39003/01-2940 is based on the tantalum pentoxide layer that serves as the dielectric. This layer is produced by chemically mixing tantalum metal powder with a solution of carbonate dissolved in water. Additional chemical elements may be added to further enhance the features of the dielectric.The anode of the capacitor is a layer of solid tantalum on the inner wall of the capacitor. The cathode is the negative plate, which is coated with a gel-like electrolytic. This electrolyte is mainly composed of sulphuric acid, which acts as an ionic conductor.When the capacitor is charged, the positive ions in the electrolyte travel to the anode, while the negative ions move to the cathode. This creates an electric field between the anode and the cathode, which causes an accumulation of electric charge.When the capacitor is connected to an external circuit, the potential difference causes a current to be drawn through the capacitor and the electric charge is transferred through the dielectric material. This process creates an alternating electric field in the capacitor, which increases the capacitance.Tantalum capacitors are also known for their stability and are used in circuits where the capacitance must remain constant from voltage and temperature variations. The temperature coefficient of capacitance is also low in these types of capacitors as compared to other types such as aluminium electrolytic capacitors.Overall, M39003/01-2940 capacitors provide a reliable source of capacitance in applications such as military & aerospace, medical, and automotive.
