Tantalum Capacitors
Tantalum capacitors are solid electrolytic capacitors which use tantalum metal as anode, which is coated by an oxidized layer acting as dielectric material. They are the main type of electrolytic capacitor, due to its small size, good electrical and thermal characteristics, low cost and wide range of capacitance values. The major usage areas are in portable electronic equipment and aviation, military, automotive electronics and robotics applications.M39003/01-2971/HSD capacitors are chip tantalum capacitors with polyester (PET) film dielectric, specifically conforming to military standard MIL-PRF-39003/01-2971/HSD. This type of capacitor is designed for high frequency and high-temperature applications. It is characterized by low resistance-capacitance (ESR) and high capacitance per unit volume.The construction of the M39003 capacitor consists of two plates (an anode and a cathode), an organic dielectric film between them, a solid electrolyte (like MnO2), and a glass passivation layer to seal the assembly. The anode plate is made from high-grade tantalum, which is processed to form a very thin layer on its surface. This layer acts as the dielectric and increases the capacitance of the capacitor. The cathode plate is made from a metal, usually manganese dioxide, which acts as the electrolyte or conductive medium.The working principle of the M39003/01-2971/HSD capacitor is based on the phenomenon of capillary attraction. When a voltage is connected across the electrodes of the capacitor, the electric field generated between the plates attracts the electrolyte material towards it and forms a closed electrical circuit. This electric circuit allows the passage of current, thus allowing electrical charge to flow through the capacitor.
