Tantalum capacitors are a type of polarized electrolytic capacitor which has a tantalum anode with an oxidized layer serving as the dielectric. The anode sprays tantalum oxide during the oxide-forming process, creating a fixed layer on the surface of the anode. This layer serves as the dielectric and, with appropriate thickness, has the properties of good capacitance, stability and high insulation resistance. As a consequence, Tantalum capacitors are ideal for use in various electronic circuits. The M39003/01-3069 is a fully molded surface mount tantalum capacitor designed in accordance with the MIL-PRF-39003/01 specification. The M39003/01-3069 capacitor is widely used in various high-reliability, high-density, and high-temperature applications, such as medical. The small size of M39003/01-3069 makes it suitable for use in portable electronic devices as well. With its wide temperature range and its ability to handle high operating power levels, the M39003/01-3069 is ideal for switching power supplies, dc/dc converters, power management, and analog circuits. M39003/01-3069 tantalum capacitors have an anode made from tantalum wire, a dielectric of tantalum pentoxide, and a cathode of manganese dioxide. Although there are differences in material and shape due to the capacitance range of each part, all of them adopt a flat top structure with the component placed in a rectangular-shaped package. The capacitance range of M39003/01-3069 capacitors can go from 0.047uf up to 4700uf with operating temperature ranging from -55°C to +125°C. The operating principle of the M39003/01-3069 is simple. When a voltage applied across the capacitor, charges begins to accumulate on the capacitor’s anode and cathode. The dielectric layer between the two plates, comprised of tantalum pentoxide, prevents the charges from flowing from one plate to another. The charge accumulates on each plate until a certain amount is collected, known as capacitance. The capacitance of the capacitor will depend on the size of the capacitor’s plates, the type and quality of the dielectric material and the distance between the plates.
