Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are stored-energy devices created from tantalum and a dielectric material. They are available in two basic versions, molded and wet tantalum capacitors. The M39003/01-3121/TR capability is 0.1uF and it\'s a molded SMT capacitor used between power supplies and logic circuits, and on low voltage/high current circuits.

Molded type SMT capacitors typically hold 2–10uF of capacitance, and have a greater tolerance for voltage than wet versions. The working principle of a tantalum capacitor is that, when placed in a circuit, it stores an electrostatic charge in between two electrodes. When a voltage is applied to the electrodes, the stored energy in the electrostatic field is released and the current starts to flow.

At a microscopic level, when a voltage is applied to the electrodes, the electrical field generated between the capacitor plates forms a dielectric layer of charge that creates an insulated space, where electric charges are stored. This stored charge is able to provide a high power, low impedance output to connected components, and acts as an electrical energy source between two semiconductor devices.

Due to their low ESR, M39003/01-3121/TR capacitors are able to supply hundreds of milliamps of current at very low power levels. This allows them to meet the needs of high power and low power consumer electronics devices, such as smartphones, desktop computers, laptops, and gaming consoles.
