Tantalum capacitors, like their ceramic counterparts, are constructed from two hardened metallic plates, separated from each other by an insulating material known as a dielectric. The dielectric can be a solid substrate or a liquid. In a solid tantalum capacitor, the plates are a metal oxide that is pre-sintered or annealed with a tantalum salt, forming a electrolyte for the capacitor. The dielectric layer, or dielectric, then forms on the electrodes when the salt is heated in a furnace. This dielectric is then used to store a charge when the capacitor is energized.
