Application Field

M39003/01-5077/HSD series are mainly used for high frequency switching power supplies as the DC link, output filter, and for input capacitor filter. The series is also suitable for various general purpose applications that require high temperature stability, such as high stage amplifiers.

Working Principle

A tantalum capacitor is a type of electrolytic capacitor, which is composed of tantalum metal, anode oxide dielectric, electrolyte, and two leads. The anode foil and cathode foil are the two electric-conducting plates, made of electrodeposited tantalum metal, alternate oxide film, and electrolyte. This structure, is what is known as a soft-anode lead-frame integrating a solid-anode construction with typical etched plates.

The working principle of tantalum capacitors is often compared to that of a simple, single-cell battery. When a voltage is applied across the two leads of the capacitor, the positive terminal or anode foil is attracted to the negative terminal or cathode to form the electric field. The electric fieldthen creates a negatively charged layer of oxide on the anode which is prevented from collapsing by the electrolyte.

Tantalum capacitors have a wide range of advantages including high temperature stability, low equivalent series resistance for higher voltage and ripple current ratings, low cost, long shelf life, and low volatility. They have become increasingly popular in a variety of modern applications.
