Tantalum Capacitors
Capacitors are essential components in a broad range of electrical and electronic systems. Critical components in the construction and operation of virtually every electronic device, they store and discharge electrical energy. Tantalum capacitors are one of the most popular and reliable types of capacitors in the world. They are used for filtering, bypassing, integrating, decoupling, and other uses in all kinds of electronic and electrical systems, including those of aircraft, military equipment, medical systems, consumer electronics and telecom equipment.
M39003/01-5266H Application Field and Working Principle
The M39003/01-5266H capacitors are a series of highly reliable miniature axial capacitors manufactured by Vishay. The capacitors feature a rugged, epoxy-coated aluminum shell construction, with a 0.125" diameter x 0.185" length. The capacitors are rated for high temperature applications, with a maximum rated operating temperature of 105°C (221°F). The capacitors are RoHS compliant and lead-free, making them especially well-suited for industrial, military, and medical use.
The capacitance of the M39003/01-5266H capacitors varies from 0.1µF to 0.047µF, with rated voltage of 6.3V and 10V. The capacitors have a high quality factor (Q) above 2400, and offer exceptionally high energy storage density due to their extremely low equivalent series resistance (ESR). The capacitors are designed to be mechanically robust, able to withstand high vibration and shock. The axial leads are insulated with sleeving to provide additional protection from external influences.
The use of tantalum capacitors in electronic devices is based on the principle of capacitance. Capacitance occurs when two non-conductive and non-magnetic layers are separated by a dielectric material. In a capacitor, these layers are called plates. When a voltage source is connected across the two plates, a charge builds up in the dielectric material, causing an electric field to exist between them. As a result, the capacitance of the device is proportional to the spacing between the plates and the dielectric constant of the material between them.
The M39003/01-5266H capacitors use a dielectric made from porous tantalum, along with a system of layers of conductive materials. When an alternating current flows through the capacitor, the magnetic field generated by the current induces an electric current in the secondary circuit made of conductive materials. This secondary current produces a voltage in the dielectric layer that opposes the applied voltage, thus reducing the overall current flowing through the capacitor and decreasing its capacitance. This voltage is used to regulate the current flowing through the capacitor and is referred to as the dielectric absorption voltage (DV). The DV of the M39003/01-5266H tantalum capacitors is typically around 6V and 10V.
