Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are a type of electrolytic capacitor which is composed of tantalum metal as an anode, covered by a layer of oxide which acts as the dielectric, and surrounded by liquid or solid electrolyte as the cathode. This form factor has a high capacitance per unit volume, allowing the fabrication of smaller discrete components for use in electronic equipment. A tantalum capacitor\'s advantageous electrical properties, such as the ability to hold electrical charge for an extended time, make it well suited for use in a range of applications.

M39003/01-6042 Application Field and Working Principle

The M39003/01-6042 is a series of surface mount tantalum capacitors from Vishay. These capacitors are well-suited for use in portable and automotive electronics, consumer electronics, and military and aerospace applications. The capacitors provide stable electrical performance and reliable operation, even in hostile environments.

At the heart of these capacitors is a cylindrical configuration of two layers of tantalum metal. The anode is made up of pure tantalum, while a manganese dioxide layer acts as the dielectric between them and a solid electrolyte known as solid manganese dioxide fills the space in between the two layers. When a voltage is applied across the capacitor, a small electric current flows, causing the layers to form a thin film of oxide. This layer acts as an insulator and enables the capacitor to store electrical energy and charge.

The M39003/01-6042 series capacitors are constructed using a molded, power chip (PK) construction, which helps to reduce the capacitance drift due to temperature cycling and vibration. The capacitance range of the series is from 4.7 µF to 22 µF, with a rated operating temperature range of -55°C to +105°C. The capacitors are available in three case sizes (0201, 0402, 0603) and two different voltage ratings (10V and 16V).

The M39003/01-6042 capacitors provide excellent low-leakage performance, high stability, and ESR ratings. Their robust construction makes them highly reliable for use in demanding applications, and thanks to their tiny package sizes they can be used in even the most compact of designs.
