Working Principle

The working principle of M39003/01-6087/HSD tantalum capacitors is based on the capability of the tantalum material to store electrical energy. The capacitor is constructed of two electrodes with a layer of tantalum oxide between them - the dielectric material. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, the single layer of tantalum oxide acts as an insulating material between the two electrodes, allowing it to store a certain amount of energy.The anode of the capacitor is constructed out of tantalum powder that is sintered with a highly purified manganese dioxide. The sintering process and the inclusion of the manganese dioxide gives the anode a porous structure that can hold an electrolyte, usually in the form of a liquid.The cathode of the capacitor is electrically connected to the anode, and to the external circuit, via a wire. This cathode is generally made of an electrically conducting material such as aluminum or copper.When the capacitor is connected to an external circuit, current flows from the anode through the electrolyte and then to the cathode. The ions of the electrolyte re-arrange themselves under the influence of the applied voltage and thus producing a storage plate for electrostatic energy charge.When the capacitor is disconnected from the external circuit, the stored charge remains and provides a low equivalent series resistance (ESR). This feature makes the M39003/01-6087/HSD tantalum capacitors ideal for use in pulse application and high frequency circuits.In summary, the M39003/01-6087/HSD series of tantalum capacitors make use of the dielectric properties of tantalum to store electrical energy in an efficient manner.
