When a voltage is applied to a tantalum capacitor, an electric field is created around its electrodes. This electric field accumulates electrons in the anode and holes in the cathode, also known as the “electronic double layer”. The double layer of accumulated charges stores energy in the form of an electric potential and helps reduce the impedance across the capacitor, providing the capacitor with a low ESR. The capacitance of a tantalum capacitor can range from 10µF to 500µF, depending on its physical size. It’s capacitance is also dependent on the diameter of the anode and the viscosity of the electrolyte solution.In addition to their capacitance and ESR characteristics, tantalum capacitors also have very good temperature characteristics. They are very stable over a wide temperature range and their capacitance remains relatively constant over a wide temperature range. This makes them ideal for use in applications where the temperature is expected to vary over a wide range.Tantalum capacitors are used in a wide variety of commercial, industrial, and consumer electronic devices and provide a reliable source of energy storage, a low ESR, and excellent temperature characteristics.
