Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors make use of an electrolyte and are used in a variety of applications, such as automotive, medical, and consumer electronics. Working Principle

The M39003/01-6190/TR capacitor consists of two metal electrodes separated by a semi-conductive layer of tantalum pentoxide. This layer acts as an electrical insulator, as well as a dielectric, enabling the capacitor to store electrical energy. It is usually referred to as a “dielectric layer.”

When a voltage is applied to the capacitor’s terminals, the tantalum pentoxide layer prevents current from flowing through the capacitor, and the electrodes become charged. The amount of charge stored depends on the voltage applied and the capacitance of the device. The capacitor can then release this charge as current when the voltage across its terminals is reduced.
