<p>Tantalum capacitors, also known as tantalum electrolytic capacitors, are a type of electrolytic capacitor. They are constructed with tantalum metal for the anode and an oxide for the dielectric, the two being separated by a thin layer of electrolytic solution. The tantalum capacitor was developed as an alternative to the aluminum electrolytic capacitor for use in circuits requiring high capacitance values with a low profile and high frequency capabilities. The M39003/01-6226 is a radial leaded tantalum capacitor designed for general purpose applications including: high power vibration, automotive, aerospace, and military applications. It is composed of a negative-electrode (cathode) made from tantalum and a positive-electrode (anode) made from a sintered anode construction. A plastic film insulator between the two electrodes completes the structure. The sintered anode is filled with an electrolyte containing dissolved acids such as sulfuric acid.</p><p>When a direct voltage is applied, electrons start to flow from the anode plate to the cathode plate. Due to the electrical current the electrolyte starts to dissolve the anode and the electrolyte between the plates starts to form an electric double-layer. The space between the plates, formerly empty, is now filled with a conductive solution. This creates a closed circuit allowing electrons to flow without any additional energy being needed. The current is sustained until the voltage equals the sum of the double-layer and the dissociation reaction potential. This circuit has a capacity and the product of the capacity with the load voltage is known as capacitance.</p><p>The M39003/01-6226 has an extended life and is suitable for operation in high temperature environments. It offers a low self-inductance, high capacitance, and long-term stability.
