Tantalum capacitors are polarized, non-solid electrolytic capacitors, and the M39003/01-7216H is a popular example. These capacitors are typically used for high-frequency/low-ESR applications in power management, medical equipment and lab instrumentation. In addition, the M39003/01-7216H has the advantage of exceptionally low resistive ESR, as well as high energy density.In essence, tantalum capacitors are composed of a small tantalum metal rod surrounded by an electrolyte and two electrodes. These elements contain a porous anode and use tantalum metal as the media with an electrolyte surrounding it that acts as the dielectric. Generally, the anode contains oxide between the tantalum grains, serving as the dielectric material. During operation, the anode receives a voltage from the source, which establishes a temperature-dependent electric field between the anode and the cathode.The current electrical field within the capacitance formed between the SMD tantalum capacitor’s anode and cathode plate creates an electrostatic field that polarizes the electrolyte, resulting in an electrical charge that is stored in the capacitor. This charge, known as the dielectric strength, is determined by current, voltage, and temperature. At a certain temperature level, the stored energy in the SMD tantalum capacitors reaches a maximum value known as the “ceramic” energy. Once the ceramic energy reaches its maximum, the capacitor’s capacitance and energy dissipation are both relatively constant.In operation, the device draws energy from the source, which is transported through the electrolyte. This process causes a charge to develop on the anode, creating a dielectric field between the anode and the cathode. Since the device is polarized, positive charges move toward the cathode and negative charges move toward the anode. Electrical current flows from the anode to the cathode, and the charge stored in the capacitor creates an electric field.The M39003/01-7216H, like other tantalum capacitors, can handle high voltages, up to 150VDC. This product also offers higher energy density compared to other aluminum electrolytic capacitors, and helps reduce board space requirement. In addition, the M39003/01-7216H has exceptionally low ESRs when compared to other aluminum electrolytic capacitors, and helps reduce heat generation. Finally, this product provides better overall performance and high reliability.
