Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors, also known as “tantalum capacitators”, are capacitors that use the element tantalum as its dielectric material. They are part of the hybrid capacitors family (also known as “ wet capacitors”) that are made of a tantalum anode, a polymer electrolyte, and a conductive polymer as the cathode.

Tantalum capacitors offer several advantages over traditional aluminum capacitors such as lower equivalent series resistance (ESR), better temperature and frequency stability, and higher capacitance-to-volume ratios than aluminum capacitors. Tantalum capacitors are also used in extreme environments, such as space or ocean swimming/diving electronics.

The M39003/01-7276/HSD is a family of 3-terminal wet tantalum capacitors. It is designed to meet the requirements of radiation-resistant electronic components used in aerospace and military applications. The family includes both standard and high-temperature grade capacitors. In addition, it is also qualified in accordance with DO-160G and is compliant with MIL-PRF-55365.

The M39003/01-7276/HSD utilizes a tantalum anode and a conductive polymer as its cathode. The anode is coated with an oxide film using an electrolyte solution and is connected to a two-terminal terminal block. The cathode is a conductive polymer that forms the negative terminal of the capacitor. It is also covered with an oxide layer to increase its electrical insulation. Both the anode and cathode are separated by a dielectric layer, which is the function of the capacitor. When a voltage is applied across the terminals, the dielectric stores a charge on the anode and cathode, allowing for capacitance and filtering of the applied voltage.

Unlike aluminum electrolytic capacitors, tantalum capacitors do not suffer from electrolysis and electrolyte evaporation. This increases the reliability and reduces the risk of shorting between the capacitor terminals. Moreover, the anode is resistant to oxidation and therefore has a longer life span than aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Furthermore, the high-temperature grade capacitors can withstand temperatures up to 150°C, allowing them to be used in automotive and industrial applications.
