Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are a type of electrolytic capacitor which is characterized by its high capacitance per unit volume. It has many advantages over other electrolytic capacitors, such as long life, low leakage currents, high dielectric absorption ratio, and low equivalent series resistance. Tantalum capacitors are typically constructed with tantalum wire as its anode, and a dielectric formed from an oxide layer on the anode as its cathode.

M39003/01-7292/HSD is a type of tantalum capacitor designed for use in a variety of applications, including airborne, military, and medical applications. The capacitor has a very low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and is designed for high reliability. It also has a high dielectric absorption ratio, which makes it suitable for applications such as low frequency noise rejection, power factor correction, and signal conditioning. The working principle behind M39003/01-7292/HSD is similar to that of other electrolytic capacitors, involving ions in the electrolyte or oxide layer on the anode moving towards the anode or cathode when the applied voltage is positive or negative, respectively.

The M39003/01-7292/HSD capacitor is a four terminal capacitor that uses a double-sided tantalum wire as its anode, and a dielectric layer of oxide on the anode as its cathode. The double-sided tantalum anode ensures good electrical contact between the capacitor terminals, while the dielectric layer of oxide provides superior insulation between the anode and cathode. The capacitor is constructed with a very thin layer of tantalum anode, which allows for the capacitor to take high voltage spike pulses. This high voltage capability is also made possible due to the capacitor’s low equivalent series resistance.

In order to protect the capacitor from extreme electrical conditions, it is designed with a thermal cutoff device, which is electrically connected to the capacitor’s positive terminal. When the temperature rises above a certain point, the device is activated and cuts off the current to the positive terminal, preventing the capacitor from experiencing thermal runaway.
