Tantalum capacitors are ideal for applications requiring high capacitance, high volumetric efficiency, and low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance), together with some of the highest rated voltages available among the various capacitor technologies. The M39003/01-8019/HSD is a good example, featuring a capacitance of 47 μF, operating temperature range of -55°C to 125°C, and rated voltage of 16 V.

The M39003/01-8019/HSD tantalum capacitor is designed as a radial leaded, encapsulated device and carries a high stability of ±20% from -55°C to +125°C. The capacitor has an ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) of 0.04 Ω and is reflow solderable. The RoHS compliant assembly guarantees a starting point no higher than 0.5V with an operation ripple current of 8A.

These capacitors are ideal for use wherever high capacitance and/or high voltage are required in a compact space. The most common application of tantalum capacitors is for decoupling, energy storage, and filtering in DC-link circuits, as the high capacitance levels are simular to aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

Tantalum capacitors are built similar to an Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitor, with one major difference: an oxide of Tantalum is deposited on the capacitor’s surface between the anode element and the dielectric. This oxide layer is formed using an anodization process. The capacitance of a tantalum capacitor is directly related to this oxide layer thickness, which is why they can be manufactured with very high capacitance values.

The oxide layer’s existence as the capacitor’s dielectric makes it the main factor that determines the performance of a tantalum capacitor. Its high dielectric strength allows for both high capacitance and the higher rated values in voltages that are not attainable with other capacitor technologies.

The intercomnects or the electrolytic paste must not be exposed to temperatures over 125°C during the reflow soldering process. During soldering, the capacitor is exposed to mechanical, thermal and electrical stresses that can potentially damage both the capacitor’s body and the oxide layer beneath it.
