Tantalum capacitors, assembled from two basic components, are a type of capacitors used in the electronic industry. The most common type of tantalum capacitor, the M39003/03-0107H, is a commercial-grade capacitors that is designed to provide filtering in circuits where high grade capacitance is needed.

Components

The M39003/03-0107H is made up of two parts: an anode, made of a sintered tantalum powder that is shaped into a cylinder; and a cathode, a layer of oxide that forms a dielectric layer over the anode. Most also utilize a polymer-based electrolyte. The two parts are held together in a metal can with wettable flakes or epoxy.

Types

Working Principle

The M39003/03-0107H capacitor works on a simple principle: when an electrical current is applied to the capacitor, the electrical charges are stored on the surfaces of the anode and cathode. These charges are then used to provide a capacitive filter for a variety of electrical circuits.

The anode of the M39003/03-0107H is made of a sintered tantalum powder, illustrated in figure 1. This powder is pressed with a die under high pressure, creating a cylindrical shape with a specific geometric distribution of particles within the cylinder. The oxide layer is then formed over the anode, creating the dielectric. The cathode is then connected to the anode, allowing for electrical charges to flow more easily.

When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, electrons are drawn from the anode to the cathode, creating an electric field. This field then stores the electrical charges, providing the capacitance, or filtering ability, of the capacitor.

The M39003/03-0107H capacitor works in similar fashion to other capacitors, but with the advantage of being able to store a higher level of charge due to its unique design. It is also very reliable and offers excellent performance for long periods of time.
