Tantalum capacitors are type of electrolytic capacitor. They are frequently used in circuits which requires a relatively small amount of capacitance, typically around several μF up to 1 F.M39003/03-0183 tantalum capacitors are a type of surface mount capacitor with very small form factor. They have an overcoat of insulating polyimide or dry film, ensuring high stability and electrical isolation.

The M39003/03-0183 capacitor is a type of miniature radial leaded tantalum capacitors. It uses metallic tantalum for its anode and a ceramic/polymer electrolyte as dielectric. The cathode and anode end of the capacitor are electrically separated by the ceramic/polymer dielectric layer. This type of capacitors is ideal for the most demanding space and weight saving applications, especially since electrical parameters remain consistent with frequency changes. The M39003/03-0183 tantalum capacitors feature tin-plated anode and cathode end terminations with high shelf life, for operation with temperatures at -55ーC to +125ーC.

The capacitance of a tantalum capacitor is determined by the area of the electrodes and the dielectric constant of the polymer. The Dielectric constant of the polymer is typically around about 60 times that of air, giving a much higher capacitance for the same size of capacitor. The capacitance is also determined by the size and shape of the electrodes, with the larger and more symmetrical the electrodes, the higher the capacitance of the resulting component.

The main purpose of using a tantalum capacitor, is to store electrical charges on its surface electrodes. At its most basic, any capacitor consists of a pair of surfaces, between which an electrical field is established. When an electrical charge is applied to an electrode on one of the surfaces, it repels an equal and opposite charge on the other surface. This charge remains in place until something is changed in the capacitor, such as its voltage or temperature, redistributing the charge. This process can be used to store electrical charges in the device, and the capacitor can be used to provide a steady, controlled current to the circuit.

M39003/03-0183 tantalum capacitors are also designed for use in high-frequency applications. They feature low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) values that provide minimal re-radiation between source and load, which are critical in applications such as medical device packs, where very high frequencies are relevant. This type of capacitor also provides the same consistency in electrical parameters regardless of the load frequency.
