Tantalum Capacitors: M39003/03-0479/HSD Application Field and Working PrincipleTantalum capacitors are an important component in many electronic products. They are known for their excellent temperature stability, high specific energy, and long cycle life. The M39003/03-0479/HSD tantalum capacitors are specifically designed to be used in high reliability and harsh environment applications such as high performance Military and Aerospace applications.Tantalum capacitors are polarized, meaning that they must be connected to a power source with the correct polarity in order for their operation to be successful and provide reliable operation. The polarized nature of tantalum capacitors requires that all connections are properly identified and marked, particularly if a multirow configuration is desired. Properly connected components will ensure superior performance and serve to minimize risks associated with improper connections.The M39003/03-0479/HSD tantalum capacitors are constructed with sintered tantalum powder cores, solid anodes of electrodeposited manganese dioxide, and air tight/hermetically sealed cases. Virtually all electrical connections are welded using standard high frequency induction (resistance) welding systems.The operating principle of a tantalum capacitor is based on the formation of a naturally formed electrical barrier at the top of the solid anode. This barrier forms when the voltage differential between the two electrically connected elements (anode and cathode) is greater than the designed voltage rating of the device. The capacitance of the device is, in this instance, determined using the equation C=KSA/d, where K is the dielectric constant of the oxide, S is the area of the anode-to-cathode gap, A is the area of the oxide layer, and d is the thickness of the dielectric layer.The application field of the M39003/03-0479/HSD tantalum capacitors generally includes those areas that require prolonged and reliable DC filtering and electrical/electronic power conditioning capabilities, such as Aerospace, Military, and other high-performance applications. Specialized designs of these capacitors are available with hermetically sealed cases and oxide filled epoxy real estate (OFE). Such capacitors are also sensitive to thermal cycling and depending on the required application, the OFE-filled capacitors may not be suitable.The M39003/03-0479/HSD capacitors provide excellent temperature stability, high specific energy, and long cycle life. Their designed voltage rating is guaranteed from -54°C to +125°C with an enhanced temperature range of -67°C to +150°C for extended performance. Source voltage ratings of up to 220 Volt DC/AC are available.Additionally, the M39003/03-0479/HSD capacitors provide an excellent dynamic frequency response, high surge current withstand capability, and MIL-PRF-29137/46481 performance qualification. These capacitors outperform conventional tantalum capacitors and are therefore suitable for high-reliability and harsh environment applications such as Aerospace and Military.Overall, the M39003/03-0479/HSD capacitors are an excellent choice for those applications requiring long life, high specific energy, and excellent temperature stability.
