Tantalum Capacitors

Tantalum capacitors are semiconductor devices consisting of two metal plates separated by a tantalum electrolytic and resin film. They are widely used in electronic circuits for a variety of applications due to their high capacitor ratios, low leakage currents, and excellent electrical insulation properties. The M39003/03-0484H is an ultra-low ESR tantalum capacitor with a maximum rated voltage of 10V. It is a type of non-polarized, two-terminal electrolytic capacitor that is widely used in applications ranging from RF and audio to industrial motor control.

Application Field

The wide range of applications of the M39003/03-0484H includes high switching power supplies, DC/DC converters, and switching circuits. Its non-polarized design makes it suitable for use in AC/DC circuits, while its low ESR (<1 Ohm) allows for higher ripple current ratings and improved circuit performance. The device is commonly used as a stabilizing element in multilayer printed circuit boards, as well as for bypassing purposes.

As a high-performance capacitor, it is also frequently used in signal filtering circuits, such as loudspeaker crossover or equalizer filters, and in RF amplifiers.

Working Principle

Tantalum capacitors consist of two alternate layers of tantalum and dielectric. The electrode consists of mica sheet that is deposited electrochemically onto the two tantalum plates. This forms an electrical connection between them, allowing for current to flow between the two plates. When the capacitor is connected to an external voltage source, the positive and negative charges alternatively build up on the two plates, creating a voltage difference between them.

Due to the porous structure of the tantalum plates, the ions stored in the capacitor are able to move freely, allowing for a larger amount of charge to be stored on the plates. The dielectric also plays an important role in the performance of the capacitor, as it helps to reduce leakage current and maintain low ESR. The dielectric is usually made up of either an organic material, such as polyester or polycarbonate, or an inorganic material, such as Ta2O5.
