Tantalum capacitors function similarly to electrolytic capacitors, but tantalum capacitors provide many advantages including lower ESR, longer lifetime and higher temperature resistance. In a tantalum capacitor, the electrodes are separated by a thin layer of tantalum pentoxide as the dielectric material. An electrolyte, usually provided in the form of a wet tantalum paste, is applied on both sides of the dielectric layer to complete the capacitor cell. When a voltage is applied across the capacitor, the electrolyte is polarized and forms an oxide layer on the tantalum surface. This oxide layer functions as the dielectric material, allowing for electrical charge storage.
