When a positive electric charge is applied to one electrode, a positive charge accumulates at the other electrode. This charge leakage causes a current to flow that charges the capacitor and stores the electric energy.

When the discharge of the capacitor occurs, this current will flow in the opposite direction and discharge the capacitor. The capacitor will continue to discharge until it reaches equilibrium, at which point no further current will flow. The stored energy can then be released and used for its intended purpose.
