The M39003/09-0146/HSD application field and working principle is based on a complex charge and discharge process. The primary function of the capacitor is to act as an energy storage device, much like a battery. When a voltage is applied to its terminals, ions from a second metal, preferably in aqueous solution, migrate to the base metal (tantalum oxide) which in turn stores electrical energy.

When a capacitor is connected to a power source, electrons are attracted to the positively-charged electrode, which forms an electric field that enables electricity to flow. This process, called charging, continues until the capacitor reaches the voltage of the power source. When the voltage is removed from the power source, the electric field is released and the electrons in the capacitor travel back to the positively-charged electrode. This process, called discharging, continues until all the energy stored has been released from the capacitor.

The capacitance of a capacitor is the amount of charge it holds in relation to the applied electric field. The larger the capacitance, the greater the electrical energy stored. The M39003/09-0146/HSD has a rated capacitance of 15μF and a standard tolerance value of +/-10%. The maximum operating voltage is rated at 20VDC.
