Tantalum Capacitors: M39003/09-0237H Application Field and Working PrincipleTantalum capacitors are becoming increasingly popular in today’s electronic industry due to their advantages over other types of capacitors such as ceramic, aluminum electrolytic and other types of capacitors. Tantalum capacitors are made of a tantalum alloy which contains at least 50% of the metal. The other material used in the composition of the capacitor is a manganese dioxide material. This two material combination produces a higher energy density than any of the other capacitor types. The tantalum capacitor model M39003/09-0237H is a hermetically sealed, solid analog capacitor with a rated voltage of 350 to 450 VDC. This product is available in three different sizes that range from 0.25 to 0.875 inches in overall diameter. This series of capacitors utilizes hermetic silicon sealed technology and a high temperature tantalum anode, with lead based metal caps. This combination creates a capacitor with a high operational frequency for use in all types of applications. The working principle of a tantalum capacitor relies on the movement of charges between layers of two materials across a medium called an electrolyte. The capacitors have two plates made of conductive metal, and a non-conductive material between them which acts as a separator or dielectric. In a tantalum capacitor, one of the plates is made of tantalum, and the other plate is another metal. The electrolyte material used in a tantalum capacitor is usually a manganese dioxide or a polycarbonate material. When the plates are connected to a power supply, a voltage is applied across them which causes a charge to flow from one plate to another.
