Tantalum capacitors, sometimes referred to as electrochemical capacitors, have been used in a wide variety of applications for many decades. They are among the most common types of surface mount capacitors used in today’s electronics and have some of the best characteristics of any capacitor available. M39003/09-0336/TR is a type of tantalum capacitors, and we will discuss its application field and working principle in this article.

M39003/09-0336/TR Working Principle
Tantalum capacitors use a porous layer of tantalum as the dielectric material and have a tantalum-oxide (Ta2O5) dielectric layer between the two electrodes. The capacitor is constructed by depositing a solution of aqueous tantalum pent oxide mixed with a binder over a thin tantalum sheet. During the construction process, both the anode and cathode set up an electric field at the tantalum oxide layer, while the binder holds everything together.
When the voltage increases, the electrons in the oxide layer move from the anode to the cathode and the oxide layer increases in thickness. The increase in thickness causes an increase in capacitance. However, when the voltage decreases, the electrons move back to the anode and the oxide layer decreases in thickness, resulting in a decrease in capacitance. This phenomenon is known as the “Coloumbthickening” effect.
Additionally, the leakage current of M39003/09-0336/TR is controlled by the conduction band in the Ta2O5 dielectric, and this leakage current can be as low as 0.01 μA (5.5V – see EIA 535-BAAC standard). This very low leakage current allows tantalum capacitors to be used in high reliability applications.
