Tantalum Capacitors

The M39003/09-4076/HSD series of tantalum capacitors, also known as Ta-capacitors, are an important component in a multitude of electronic circuits. They are used to provide high quality capacitance in very small form factor packages, and can be found in applications ranging from mobile and consumer electronics to industrial applications.

Typically, these capacitors are constructed using a tantalum cylindrical anode body, with cobalt-doped manganese dioxide as the dielectric material. Connection of this anode to the outside world is made via a tantalum oxide-coated cathode lead.

The primary purpose of a tantalum capacitor is to provide capacitance to a circuit, essentially storing and releasing electrical energy. The amount of energy that can be stored is known as the capacitance, and is typically denoted in farads (F).

When the capacitor is supplied with a voltage signal, the dielectric material between the electrodes stores an electric charge, and the electrical energy stored is determined by the size of the capacitance. When DC voltage is applied to the capacitor, the dielectric material prevents electric current from flowing, effectively acting as an insulator.

For AC voltage, energy is alternately stored and released depending on the frequency of the signal. This has the effect of passing the AC component of the signal while blocking the DC component, effectively filtering the signal. This process is known as capacitive coupling, and can be used in a variety of circuits for signal conditioning, such as low pass and high pass filters.
