Tantalum capacitors provide low leakage, stable electrical performance, a wide range of operating voltages, and polarized designs for added safety. The M39003/09-4080/HSD is a high-temperature polarized foil construction, long-life capacitor developed for use in extreme environmental conditions.

Applications

The M39003/09-4080/HSD is a radial leaded solid tantalum capacitor designed for use in extreme environment applications such as space, avionics, military and medicare applications. It is designed to withstand high temperatures up to and beyond 250°C without failure and is stable at temperatures up to -55°C. The extremely low ESR (equivalent series resistance) of this capacitor makes it suitable for use in power supplies, power converters, motor controllers, RF amplifiers, and other high-performance applications that require stable reliable performance. The M39003/09-4080/HSD is also ideal for use in circuits with high ripple currents, such as laptops, telecommunications equipment, automotive electronics, test and instrumentation, and audio systems.

Working Principle

The M39003/09-4080/HSD tantalum capacitor is made up of an insulating dielectric layer between two metal layers – a tantalum anode and a manganese dioxide cathode. The tantalum anode layers are corroded to increase their surface area, and this increases the capacitance of the capacitor. The tantalum layer can also be doped to increase its conductivity. The manganese dioxide layer acts as an electrolyte and provides connections between the two electrodes. It also provides an electrical path for the electrons to flow from the anode to the cathode. This creates an electric field between the two layers, allowing for the exchange of electrons between them.

When an external voltage is applied to the capacitor, an electric field is created between the anode and cathode that attracts electrons from the anode layer to the cathode layer, creating an accumulation of charge on each layer. This charge accumulates until the electric field between the two layers is equal, at which point the capacitor is said to be “charged”. The metal layers will then act like a closed circuit, allowing current to flow freely between them until the external voltage is removed. This exchange of charge is what creates the “capacitance” of the tantalum capacitor, and it is this property that makes it a useful component in electrical and electronic circuits.

The M39003/09-4080/HSD has been specially designed for use in high-temperature applications that require stable performance and low leakage. The high-temperature construction of the capacitor ensures that it will remain stable at temperatures up to 250°C, making it an ideal choice for use in extreme environment applications.
