Working Principle

Tantalum capacitors are constructed with a tantalum anode and cathode along with a solid electrolyte. A schematic of a typical tantalum capacitor configuration is shown below.

When a voltage is applied across the anode and cathode, tantalum ions are attracted to the anode, where oxygen ions from the electrolyte are also attracted. A capacitor is formed as charged ions are sandwiched between the anode and cathode, and a dielectric layer is created. When voltage is applied across the terminals, electric current flows through the capacitor and charges it.
