Tantalum capacitors serve as useful components in a variety of applications due to their size versus capacitance ratio, exceptional frequency characteristics, and ability to withstand high ambient temperature. Among these applications is the M39006/22-0457, also known as the “SAE” or Solid Aluminum Electrode. This capacitor has a basic form resembling that of a conventional aluminum electrolytic capacitor, with a smaller dielectric to provide additional space saving. This capacitor has an operating temperature range of -55 to +125 degrees Celsius, and is used in a variety of signal processing, filtering, and high current power supply applications.The basic structure of the M39006/22-0457 capacitor is two electrodes filled with two separate electrolytes: a tantalum salt and a liquid electrolyte. The salty electrolyte is a solution of hydrochloric acid and the liquid electrolyte is a solution of sulfuric acid. The positive electrode is composed of a barium-tantalum oxide film, while the negative electrode is composed of a lead-tantalum oxide film. The two electrolytes are divided by a separator consisting of a porous plastic material.The M39006/22-0457 capacitor operates on the same principles as other capacitors, but its components differ due to the unique characteristics of tantalum. Since the electrodes of the M39006/22-0457 capacitor are composed of tantalum oxide, they act as a semiconductor and increase the capacitance in relation to the applied voltage. This makes it ideal for applications such as signal processing and filtering, where small values of capacitance are needed at relatively low voltages.The main similarity between the M39006/22-0457 and conventional capacitors is that both work by accumulating electric charge on the two electrodes. The voltage applied across the capacitor determines the amount of charge that the capacitor can store.
