Tantalum - Polymer Capacitors are a type of surface mounted capacitor which have been rapidly gaining in popularity over the past decade. This relatively new type of capacitor utilizes tantalum (Ta) elements and polymer layers, combined to form capacitors with higher capacitance, lower ESR, and better performance than traditional tantalum capacitors. M550B347M030AS Capacitor is specifically designed for general-purpose applications, with a capacitance of 1.5μF and a working voltage of 6.3V. In addition, it has an operating temperature range of – 55°C to + 125°C with a maximum Ripple Current of 5.0 mArms at +125°C. It has exceptionally low ESR and is therefore highly suitable for use in applications such as; communications and power management, or power conditioning and regulation.

The construction of the M550B347M030AS includes two layers of porous tantalum anode and cathode foils which are then impregnated with a specially formulated electrolyte. The electrolyte provides both electrical insulation and a conductive dielectric component which is used to further increase its capacitance. Finally, an outer non-conductive polymer insulation layer provides protection against mechanical damage and other environmental factors such as moisture and corrosion.

The mechanism of a Tantalum – Polymer capacitor is relatively simple. In essence, when an electrical current is applied to the anode and cathode foils, a dielectric material is formed from the combination of the electrolyte and polymer layers, allowing a current to flow between them. The distribution of electrical charge between the anode and cathode foils causes an electrical potential to be established, which is effectively stored within the capacitor as the dielectric material is arranged in such a way to create a barrier to current flow. This stored energy is then discharged when the voltage across the components is reduced, at which point the electron configuration rearranges itself and flows back through the capacitor.
