M74HC164B1R is a high-speed 8-bit parallel datapath shift register with 3-state output. It is a type of Logic - Shift Registers which are widely applicable in various systems to carry out data transfer and computing operations.

The M74HC164B1R consists of eight three-state D-type flip-flops that are connected in series by a single clock-pulse count. Each stage of the register is preceded by an input and followed by an output of buffering capability. The signal into and out of the output of each stage is buffered. The clock signal is given to the shift register to shift the data bit in each stage serially. The signal that is input into the 1st stage becomes the output signal of the last stage simultaneously. All outputs of the register are in either high impedance or high logical level.

The main application field of the M74HC164B1R is data transferring and computing operation. The M74HC164B1R also supports a so-called "read mode" operation which is similar to the "write mode" operation. The chip allows data to be read from the shift register by controlling the CD (clear data) and RR (read) pins for parallel data path mode. For serial data path mode, the data bits are shifted out serially through the SDI (serial data in) pin by controlling the RR (read) and CP (clock) pins. This feature allows the user to essentially use one serial data path to read and write data bits to or from the shift register.

The M74HC164B1R also supports various other operations such as producing ripple counters and controlled operations such as writing and/or reading operations.
