Rectangular Connectors - Headers, Male Pins are important equipment for most of the electronic applications. The M80-551-2042 is a classic example of this essential equipment. It is a series of 3.08mm (.120") Pitch Right Angle Header. This header is used in high speed signal transmission applications such as FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface), SONET (Synchronous Optical Network), LAN (Local Area Network), Ethernet, Token Ring, HDLC, and etc. The M80-551-2042 also belongs to one of the most common types of these 3.08mm (.120") Pitch Right Angle Headers which utilizes two (2) rows of twelve (12) pins.

The M80-551-2042 is a dual row, right angle header, consisting of a number of signal contacts arrayed in two rows on a single elongated centerline. The board mating interface of the M80-551-2042 is available in either Surface Mount (SMT) or Through-Hole Mount (THM). The SMT version is designed for reflow soldering and is mounted directly onto the PCB’s surface. The THM version is designed for wave soldering and is mounted on the top of the PCB’s surface, similar to the traditional pin headers.

The M80-551-2042 is uniquely designed with an annular slot around each solder barrel that accommodates a tabbed mounting bracket (traveler) and other board mounted components. This traveler/bracket design provides additional strength and prevents PCB warping from thermal buildup. The travelers also provide efficient assembly since a single tooling mold is needed for both the header and board mounted traveler.

The contacts of the M80-551-2042 are designed to have a positive engagement with the mating female PCB surface mount sockets. To ensure proper mating, each male contact incorporates two latching notches which act as a mechanical stop for the female sockets. This design also allows a quick and reliable connection that is highly resistant to vibration and movement.

The M80-551-2042 is designed to have an electrical current rating of up to 10A per contact at 25°C for ambient temperatures. In addition, it can also operate at operating temperatures ranging from -40°C to +105°C. The M80-551-2042 is UL recognized, RoHS Compliant and material is compliant with Prop 65 standards.

The working principle of the M80-551-2042 is that the solder is melted in order to bind together the contact pins to the PCB footprints or female sockets. Once the solder is melted, a strong, electrical and mechanical, connection is established between the male contacts and the female sockets. The traveler/bracket around the solder barrels also ensure that a secure connection is made and prevents warping due to thermal buildup.

The M80-551-2042 is often used in a variety of applications such as FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface), SONET (Synchronous Optical Network), LAN (Local Area Network), Ethernet, Token Ring, HDLC, and other high speed signal transmission applications. The UL recognized M80-551-2042 is also regularly used in many residential and commercial applications such as lighting, home appliances, consumer electronics, industrial operations, and automotive industry.
