MA5KP18A TVS – Diodes are designed for high-speed data line protection against electrical transients. They are constructed following the well-known Multilayer Varistor (MLV) or “Metal Oxide Varistor” (MOV) principle. This principle works by clamping high voltage pulses that may occur due to ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) or EFT (Electrical Fast Transients). The MA5KP18A range of TVS – Diodes consists of an array of discrete elements held in a single SMD package. The MA5KP18A range of TVS – Diodes have a detachable “U” shape body housing which contains 2 separate arrays of 6 Varistors, connected in parallel and parallel to the signal. This ensures very low capacitance. The MA5KP18A range can handle up to 12V without the need for extra components.

The main application field for the MA5KP18A are telecommunications, wireless systems, data lines, computers and interface protection. It can also be used in other systems including automotive, consumer, audio/video, portable electronics and power switching. The MA5KP18A offers a high surge capability and has a wide operating temperature range of -55°C to +85°C.

The working principle of the MA5KP18A TVS – Diodes is based on a semiconductor chip with a high energy storage capacity. When an over-voltage transient occurs, the current pulse is dumped into the device and redistributed. The stored energy will be gradually drained away via the “U” shape body and the 6 Varistor elements. The MA5KP18A is designed to protect against surge events that are too fast for many external components such as capacitors, surge arrestors or Thyristors. The current redistribution is achieved through the two arrays of Varistors, interconnected to the signal line.

The MA5KP18A includes an Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection circuit to provide additional protection against ESD and transient over-voltage events. The ESD protection is based on a built-in Schottky diode array that absorbs the excess energy from a surge event. This array can absorb up to 30kV ESD pulses without permanent damage.

The MA5KP18A is an excellent solution for protecting data lines from high voltage transients and ESD pulses. It can withstand up to 12V without the need for any additional components, and is ideal for applications in telecommunications, wireless systems, computer and data lines.
