The MAX487EESA is a small, low-power transceiver designed for RS-485 and RS-422 communication. It is designed to operate from a single +5 V supply, and features low-power shutdown and slew-rate-limited drivers for reduced EMI. Its fault protection circuitry is designed to meet ANSI TIA/EIA-485–A and EIA/TIA-422-B standards. It also includes both open-circuit and short-circuit fail-safe protection.

There are many applications for the MAX487EESA. It can be used to implement longest-distance communication over CAT-5 cables, differential local area networks (LANs), fiber optics links and noisy environments like factory floors. It is often used in applications where the data needs to be reliable. The MAX487EESA also provides a high-speed, low-power transceiving solution for RS-485 and RS-422 data transmission up to 50 Mbps and ±60 V fault protection. It features short-circuit and thermal protection for outputs, 25 mA output current capability and a low TTL/CMOS logic threshold for operation from any logic family. In addition, its adjustable slew rate allows the receiver to lock onto the transmitted data stream much faster than with a device that features a fixed slew rate.

The working principle of the MAX487EESA is based on the RS-485 or RS-422 protocol. It consists of two independent line drivers that can be set to send/receive data differentially on a single pair of lines. The MAX487EESA’s drivers feature line-fail detection, allowing it to detect a fault on its output lines. The output line-fail detect thresholds are internally adjustable. The device also includes a data-ready input that indicates that valid data is present at the receiver inputs.

The output levels of the MAX487EESA are adjustable, allowing it to operate with both 3.3 V and 5 V logic levels. Its input levels are also adjustable, allowing it to be used with either 3.3 V or 5 V logic levels. Its typical propagation delay is 9 μs for a 1 Mbps data rate, which is suitable for most applications. The MAX487EESA also features a low-power shutdown mode that can be used to save power in applications that do not require frequent communication.
