MAX5035AASA Application Field and Working PrinciplePMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) is a type of integrated circuit (IC) that regulates or manages the power supply of a device or system. One of its important subcategories is voltage regulators. Voltage regulator is a type of power supply which can take constant DC input voltage and output a different level of DC voltage. DC DC (direct-current to direct-current) switching regulators are one of the types of voltage regulators which can regulate and convert the input voltage to another level. The MAX5035AASA is a model of DC DC switching regulator that features a wide input voltage range and small packages typically used in space-conscious, synchronous-rectification topology.The MAX5035AASA is a space-saving DC-to-DC switching regulator optimized to operate as a step-up, step-down DC-to-DC voltage converter with input voltage range of 2.7V to 28V, and output voltage range from 0.8V to 24V. The MAX5035AASA can operate in both step-down and step-up mode and can provide an output current of 1.2A. Its key features include synchronous rectification for high efficiency, 1µA quiescent current standby mode, integrated MOSFETs, wide supply voltage range, 1.2A (V IN -2.5V) output current, programmable switching frequency, N-channel MOSFET synchronous rectification, thermal shutdown and under-voltage lockout. The MAX5035AASA comes in a 1.8mm x 0.9mm wafer-level package (WLP), which is suitable for applications with limited board space and thermal environments. The WLP ensures excellent thermal performance with an exposed metal-pad to maximize thermal conductivity. Moreover, the device is compatible with lead-free and halogen-free soldering processes. The MAX5035AASA works on a pulse-width modulation (PWM). Different from Linear Regulators, PWM regulators are far more efficient and reliable. Whenever their input voltage is higher than the output voltage, they’ll operate in step-down mode; and vice versa.The pulse-width modulation works by varying the width of the pulse rather than the amplitude of the pulse. The MAX5035AASA converts the DC power supply in the form of a digital signal and has built-in logic circuits to generate a pulse-width modulated signal. This modulated signal is then fed to the power circuitry to adjust the width of the pulses.The higher the pulse width, the more power is supplied to the load. The exact amount of power supplied to the load is determined by the duty cycle — the proportion of the period for which the signal is active. The duty cycle is used to adjust the amount of power supplied to the load. The MAX5035AASA is also equipped with integrated MOSFETs to allow for efficient switching and control of the power supply.The MAX5035AASA uses several components to make it fully operational. The device has two inputs, L1 and L2, for the power supply voltage, a frequency resistor which sets the switching frequency and a voltage sensing resistor which is used to keep output voltage within a certain range at different operating temperatures and supply voltages. The device also includes an error amplifier, a comparator and several logic circuits. The frequency resistor is used to set the frequency of the switching regulator. Generally, it is set at 1MHz. The error amplifier is used to compare the load voltage with a reference voltage and produce an analog voltage. The voltage sensing resistor is used to sense the load voltage and provide feedback to the error amplifier. The comparator takes the output of the error amplifier and compares it to a set point. Depending on the output of the comparator, the logic circuits will adjust the duty cycle of the pulse width modulated signal and maintain a stable output voltage. When the load resistance changes, the output voltage of the MAX5035AASA also changes but the voltage is always kept within the set limits. The MAX5035AASA is an excellent choice for powering space-constrained systems. Its wide input/output voltage range, low quiescent current and small size make it a great solution for applications which require a reliable DC-DC switching voltage regulator.
