The MAX5090BATE+ is a DC-DC switching regulator from Maxim Integrated\'s Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) Voltage Regulators family. It is designed for using up to 6V input power supplies and provides output voltage of up to 5.5V with step-down switching regulator circuitry. The MAX5090BATE+ provides excellent efficiency with very low output ripple and noise, improved load transient response, and excellent thermal performance. In addition, it features very low operating output current of only 6mA, making it suitable for battery-powered systems where low power consumption is critical.
The key features of the MAX5090BATE+ are wide input voltage range from 2.3V to 6V, adjustable output voltage option, pulse-skipping and forced-PWM modes, built-in protection against overvoltage, short-circuit, and over-temperature conditions, very efficient >98% power conversion with low output ripple and noise, fast transient and excellent thermal performance.
The MAX5090BATE+ is a buck regulator, or step-down regulator, which allows input voltages higher than the output voltage. This topology is used in a wide range of power supply applications, including logic and processor power supplies, telecommunications, industrial, automotive systems, and portable devices. Switching regulators operate at a frequency much higher than linear regulators, providing improved power conversion efficiency. The MAX5090BATE+ also has a built-in undervoltage lock-out (UVLO) to prevent instability in the event that the input voltage drops too low.
The MAX5090BATE+ achieves high efficiency and low output ripple and noise via a few external components. It has two pathways for controlling the switch: a pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode and a pulse-skipping mode, both of which have selectable switching frequencies and duty cycle adjustment. The PWM mode features a switched-capacitor voltage-feedback oscillator, which provides good output voltage accuracy. In addition, the MAX5090BATE+ also has a built-in voltage tracking amplifier to ensure that the output voltage is at its nominal value when the input voltage varies. Furthermore, the output voltage can be adjusted anywhere between 4.177V and 5.5V with external resistors.
The MAX5090BATE+ integrates a variety of safety features, such as overvoltage protection, short-circuit protection, over-temperature shutdown, and under-voltage lockout. These protection features provide reliable operation in the event of application faults, power supply problems, and other environmental stresses. The MAX5090BATE+ is available in a compact 4mm x 5mm DFN package, and is rated for operating temperatures from -40°C to +125°C.
