The MAX5097AATE+T is a DC-to-DC switch mode voltage regulator from the popular InstaChip range of products. It is designed to provide high-efficiency power conversion for applications such as Solid State Drives (SSDs), mobile video displays, embedded logic and system power supply designs. As a DC-to-DC switching regulator, the MAX5097AATE+T provides an extremely efficient means of providing regulated output voltage with tightly controlled tolerance as low as ±1%.
The MAX5097AATE+T is made up of an IC and associated inductor, MOSFET, and other components. It employs a high-efficiency buck-boost topology to generate regulated output voltages from a single input supply. Thanks to its integrated synchronous buck-boost topology, the MAX5097AATE+T is able to operate in both boost and buck modes with seamless transition between each mode providing unity power factor. The switching frequency is up to 500kHz with low output ripple and is configurable using an external resistor. The output voltage is adjustable from 0.9V to 5.25V over the entire input voltage range of 2.7V to 24V.
The MAX5097AATE+T supports programmable input current and output voltage monitoring by sensing the voltage across the internal sense resistor plus an external resistor, respectively. It further features short-circuit protection and adjustable soft-start. It is operating temperature range between -40°C to 85°C.

The operating principle of the MAX5097AATE+T is based on the buck-boost topology. This topology utilizes an input- and an output-side MOSFET switches, an inductor and an output-side capacitor to allow for variable output voltage. During normal operation, when the voltage on the output pin is lower than the voltage on the input pins, the voltage on the input pins will switch the input-side MOSFET on and the output-side MOSFET off. This causes a current to flow through the inductor increasing its inductance, and resulting in an increasing output voltage. Once the output voltage exceeds the input voltage the rising current will cause the MOSFETs to switch states, such that the input-side MOSFET turns off and the output-side MOSFET turns on. This process results in the output-side capacitor being charged up until the output voltage is equal to the input voltage in which case the inductor current is at its lowest. The switch mode voltage regulator constantly alternates between these two states in order to keep the output voltage at the desired level, resulting in higher efficiency than linear regulators.
