The MAX547AEMH is a Digital-to-Analog converter (DAC) designed for data acquisition and processing applications in the industrial, instrumentation, and automotive markets. This device is a complete and high-resolution 8-bit DAC with integrated rail-to-rail output amplifier, precision reference, on-chip up/down counter, and an SPI/QSPI™ compatible serial interface.
The MAX547AEMH offers excellent performance with a linearity error of ±0.2 LSB max and a total unadjusted error of ±2 LSB max. It is guaranteed to operate over the full industrial temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. In addition, it features selectable software shutdown that reduces the power consumption to 3 µA and ASIC-like safety features.
The output of the MAX547AEMH is bipolar, offering a range of ±VREF. This device is capable of handling supply voltages of 2.7V to 5.5V, making it compatible in a variety of applications. The power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of the MAX547AEMH is 68 dB min at a 1 kHz bandwidth.
The operation of the MAX547AEMH is based on the following components: an 8-bit wide input register for the data, an 8-bit-wide DAC, a voltage reference circuit, an output amplifier, and serial control logic. The input register stores the incoming data from the SPI/QSPI™ compatible serial interface, and the 8-bit DAC converts the 8-bit data into a corresponding voltage level at the output amplifier. The output amplifier then amplifies this voltage and provides the desired analog signal at the pin. The voltage reference circuit is used to provide a precise source of voltage reference, which is used to determine the range of the output voltage.
This device works by converting an 8-bit data word applied to the digital inputs into an equivalent output voltage. The output voltage is proportional to the applied 8-bit data word and follows the equation below:
Vout = 2Vref x (data/256)
Where Vref is the selected reference voltage (nominal 0.5V, 1V, and 2V). In addition, the MAX547AEMH can be configured for bipolar output for applications such as full-swing bipolar attenuators and automotive actuators.
The MAX547AEMH offers several powerful integrated options. For example, it includes an integrated on-chip up/down counter that allows user-selectable transient and steady-state output settings from 0 mV to Vref (from +Vref to -Vref for bipolar) with a clock input. An SPI/QSPI™ compatible serial interface for programming, an on-chip latch pulse generator, a write-through register option, and a selectable single-shot DAC update mode are also available. The write-through register gives the user the ability to read the contents of the DACs output register while still allowing writing a new value to the DAC. The latch pulse generator can be used to control external circuitry to update the DACs output. And the single-shot DAC update mode allows the user to update the DACs output with a single command.
The MAX547AEMH offers low total power consumption and noise immunity, making it ideally suited for high-performance data acquisition and interfacing applications. In addition, it offers excellent accuracy, high frequency operation, and fast conversion rates. The integrated options and wide operating range make the MAX547AEMH suitable for a wide range of data acquisition, instrumentation, and automotive applications.
