The MAX5527GUA+ is an integrated, single-channel, digital potentiometer (DP) offering service in the fields of data acquisition and digital potentiometers. This versatile chip uses a pair of pulse-width modulation (PWM) signals to control the setting of its two internal binary counters, and can be operated in either single-output (variable-resistor) or dual-output (variable-capacitor) configuration. The MAX5527GUA+ utilizes a two-bit memory and a two-bit register bus to interface with a software-based user interface, such as a PC or mobile device, or as part of an embedded system.

This DP has been designed as a low-voltage, low-power alternative to other available devices. The chip is capable of operation down to 2.5V and consumes less than 2.5 mW of power with all circuitry operating at 25°C. It contains a minimum of external components, making it ideal for applications with space constraints, such as smart phones, notebooks and tablets. All the I/O pins are 3.3V tolerant, allowing the device to be directly connected to the system bus.

The MAX5527GUA+ data acquisition and digital potentiometer feature a wide input range of 0 to 3V, making it suitable for applications that require precise control of current or voltage. The settling time counter prevents the device from changing output resistance too quickly, while the current limit circuitry prevents the output current from exceeding a pre-determined level. In addition, the chip provides various protection features that ensure safe and reliable operation, such as a temperature-sensitive continuous current limit detector (CLD) and an adjustable self-biasing sense amplifier.
