Power Over Ethernet (PoE) Controllers are integrated circuits used to manage the power flow for Ethernet-based systems. The MAX5941BCSE+T is a high-efficiency, high-density PoE controller that complies with the IEEE802.3af (PoE+, 15W), 802.3at (PoE+, 30W) and 802.3bt (PoE++, 60W) standards.
The MAX5941BCSE+T provides PoE power management while also offering protection features over the IEEE802.3 Ethernet cable. It has an integrated dual-port power switch with fault-recovery protection, as well as an integrated DC-DC boost regulator. The device provides network-centric features such as PoE detection, disconnection with power management, signal line protection, and power cross-talk prevention for two ports.
The MAX5941BCSE+T’s integrated dual-port power switch provides two independent switches to enable the PoE circuit. The first switch from the NPS (Network Power Switch) combines a low-side MOSFET and a high-side diode to provide lowest on-resistance and highest current-handling. The second switch from the SPS (System Power Switch) provides two independent low-side MOSFETs to drive two separate loads or two separate pathways for one load. The internal power switches also offer complete protection from over-temperature, over-voltage and reverse current. The device also features an internal voltage regulator (with an adjustable output voltage) that provides the necessary voltage and current to support the connected device.
The MAX5941BCSE+T has several features designed to ensure safety and reliability, including signal line protection and power cross-talk prevention. The signal line protection feature protects the signal side of the PoE circuit from interference, while the power cross-talk prevention feature prevents excessive power transfer between the two ports. The device is also equipped with an integrated switch power-on feature that protects against PSE Network faults (failed or non-connected networks). The MAX5941BCSE+T also includes an integrated polarity detection feature that automatically detects and reports the positive and negative signal lines on the PoE circuit.
