Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that enables electrical power to be carried to a device using the same wires that carry data. It eliminates the need for an external power source, such as an AC adapter, to power a device. The PoE components required to provide the power are a PoE controller, such as the MAX5942BESE+T, and a power source equipped with an 802.3af-compliant powered device (PD) controller. The MAX5942BESE+T PoE controller utilizes current-sense circuitry to detect and protect against overloaded lines as is required by IEEE 802.3af. The current sense circuitry can detect an overloaded condition on the line by monitoring the current being drawn and can then automatically shut down the power supply before any damage occurs.
