The new MAX5943AEEE+T is an extended temperature range, low-standby power controller for ORing configurable FETs, ideal diodes, and diode-OR devices. It monitors two FETs to ensure that only one path is used to power the system or to disconnect the load. Advanced features of this controller include precision current limit, configurable bypass current, programmable delay on channel disconnect, soft-start, programming current limit and low quiescent current. This device can be used in power supplies and systems with hot swap or power cycling requirements.
The MAX5943AEEE+T offers several features which enable easy application in a variety of ORing and bypass applications. The overcurrent detection (OCD) circuit offers a high-level precision current limit, minimizing power loss and excessive heating of the FETs. With this device, it is possible to set the level of the current limit and the magnitude of the bypass current. Moreover, an adjustable disconnect delay timer is possible to ensure clean and even current waveforms.
The MAX5943AEEE+T device features a configurable soft start. A programmable current limit is available, allowing the user to adjust the current limit threshold from 0.2A to 9.9A, ensuring accurate self-protection. This device is designed to meet hot-swap and power cycling requirements, and is suitable for use with FETs, ideal diodes, and diode-OR devices.
The internal circuitry of MAX5943AEEE+T is designed to provide minimal power consumption, start-up currents and circuit delays. The device is capable of cold start operation due to its minimal start-up current consumption. When powered-up, the voltage on the internal regulator gradually increases and the gate drivers are enabled. This process reduces stress on the external FETs, increasing their reliability.
The MAX5943AEEE+T uses a continuous PWM comparator to monitor the voltage on both FETs. If one of the FETs fails, only one road is used for power and the other FETs are disconnected. Additionally, if both FETs fail, the voltage drop at the output will exceed the trip point voltage, and the controller will disable the gate driver.
The MAX5943AEEE+T combines precise current limit and bypass current measurements, fast fault detection, programmable delay, and low quiescent current in a single device. This makes it possible to improve the efficiency and reliability of power switching in ORing applications. Further, due to the integrated soft start, the voltage and current spikes are minimized, providing safe start-up for the system without causing any device failure.
By using this device, designers can increase the efficiency of their power supply and reduce the amount of power wasted. Additionally, their systems can be hot-swapped or power cycled without any significant power ripple.
