Working Principle of MAX5975AETE+
MAX5975AETE+ is based on a PWM switching topology, with a fixed frequency of 260 KHz to control current and voltage. The PWM drives the external MOSFET and power inductor to form a buck-boost converter, where the output voltage can change from 0.8V to 1.425V. The power inductor acts as the energy storage device, enabling the MOSFET to switch with a constant frequency thereby providing a regulated output voltage.
At power on stage, the MOSFET is enabled by the VSEN1 rising reference. As the power inductor has been charged, the current flows through the diode and starts to charge the output capacitor and deliver power to the load. As the voltage of the output capacitor reaches the target voltage, the MAX5975AETE+ begins to move the signal of PWM, regulating the MOSFET to off-state. While the signal of PWM is low, the power inductor continues to charge the output capacitor, until the voltage of the output capacitor reaches the target voltage. When the signal of PWM is released, the MOSFET switches back, providing the current to the load. During the off-time, the power inductor discharges it’s stored energy, thus enabling the output voltage to reach or remain at the target voltage.
The MAX5975AETE+ also integrates an accurate current regulation loop which controls the current flowing to the load by regulating the off-time of the PWM. This regulation loop is activated whenever the current drawn from the output exceeds the current limit set in the configuration register.
Overall, MAX5975AETE+ is a great choice of AC/DC converter and offline swither, which can offer higher efficiency and better performance than some traditional AC/DC converters. Its flexible application field and elegant working principle make it a best fit to many PCB-mounted technologies.
