It provides Ethernet Power Inrush Current Protection (EPCP) from harmful electromagnetic noise as well as IEEE 802.3af/at certification for a wide range of power requirements. Additionally, MAX5982AETE+ also provides Power over Ethernet (PoE) negotiation support for a more efficient use of power.
The working principle of the MAX5982AETE+ first requires a line receiver to detect the signal and the length of the PoE cable. The main power source is provided from the signal source over the PoE cable. An Automatic Fault Detector continually monitors the signal and the length of the cable to detect any possible faults. The system then checks the voltages of the device to be powered and the Power Signal Detection (PSD) is enabled. In addition, Active Classification (AC) is also used to obtain the required current through the cable.
Once the power signal has been identified, the Voltage, Current and Power Detection (VCP) is initiated. This process monitors the characteristic of the power cable in order to match the maximum power that can be supplied. If needed, the voltage, current, and power is adjusted accordingly. Once the power requirement is matched, the MAX5982AETE+ is able to switch the device on and off, pause and resume operation in an efficient manner.
Furthermore, users can also monitor the temperature of the system in order to take proactive action to prevent any over-temperature situations. If a fault is detected such as an open circuit, shorted wire, or an overload conditions, the faults will be detected and sent to the host system for resolution.
The MAX5982AETE+ supports both lower power applications requiring less than 25W and higher power applications needing up to 90W. The product includes integrated latch protection, which protects the device even in case of fault events such as an overloaded cable.
